My next 30 Day Challenge is a cheap and dirty 26 -- Rebuilt, Re-intro!

Sorry for the random placement.  I didn't know I still had it until I got done with "T".  "Oh, what's that on the end of the blog?"  Well, it was this; and I'm going to pretend it is supposed to be here.  You should too.  If you startle the blog, it may run away again...

I have made some changes as I reposted.  Mainly, I have just been adding photos -- at least one for each blog; because I like having the pictures, and I like seeing something relevant pictures when I share them on Facebook.  This took a lot of time, but I'm really glad that I did it.  Even though I lost one blog, I don't really have anymore stress over the whole event.  B-U have been rebuilt, and are up.  I plan to start tomorrow with V-Z.  Please enjoy -- no, really, please enjoy!

Original Intro Blog:

I couldn't decide on a 30 Day Challenge to complete next, and I really am addicted to the things.  A friend of mine made a suggestion that I do an alphabet challenge(Thanks El), where each day you take the next day of the alphabet, pick a subject that begins with that letter on which to write.  I really liked the idea, but the whole incursion of life has made me uneasy to commit to something that would require so much writing (because I would do so much writing).  So, likely due to to many episodes of David Letterman's show recently (because, you know, it's right before Craig Ferguson's show), I decided to make it a Ten List.  These will either come in the form of Top Ten Lists or Ten Facts Lists.  I look forward to the challenge of completing this one.

If no calamity occurs, I plan to post the first list later tonight.

T is for Television and some shows that I love

This list is, by no means, in any kind of order.  This is also, by no means, a list of all of the shows I enjoy.  This is just a list of ten of my favorite television shows -- perhaps my ten favorite.

 01.  “Doctor Who” Classic:  The fantastically quirky stories were made even better by the campy special effects.  Each actor brought a new characterization to the Doctor, and unlike the modern incarnation, it doesn’t try too hard to be cool.  It just was cool.

02.  “The Big Bang Theory”:  Science, comics, sci-fi, and all things geeky all rolled up into four great characters and a fifth who has to deal with them.  This is one of the only current shows I include on the list.

 03. "The Fasts of Life”:  Not only was this a great comedy and a good inspiration for girls who were growing up in the 80s, this show was unafraid to tackle mature topics ranging from eating disorders to suicide.

04.  “Good Times”:  Again, not only was this a fantastic comedy (with the great J.J. Walker), it was unashamed of not only tackling but embracing such issues as racism and poverty.

 05.  “Chopped”:  This show is just great fun.  I love cooking, and I love cooking shows, but this one really takes the cake.  So, what does a professional chef do when he "has to make a quality meal out of a basket of crap?  Find out on “Chopped”!

06.  “Brimstone”:  What a great series this was, but somehow it only lasted one season.  A good man and police officer is driven to the point of corruption when he finds the man who raped his wife (and got away with it) delivered into his hands.  He kills the rapist and then dies, finding himself in Hell for this act of bloody vengeance.  As luck would have it, the Devil is in need of a guy for some talking monkey work – retrieving the evil souls that recently escaped Hell back to Earth.  We even got to have an episode with Jesse Borrego.  Mmmm…. Jesse Borrego…

 07.  “Criminal Minds”:  The FBI’s Behavioral Analysis Unit investigates crimes from kidnapping to serial killing and offer not just a solution but also an explanation for why the offender committed the crime.  I’m fascinated with the way the human mind works – especially when the person decides to commit a heinous crime.

08.  “Medium”:  Fun and serious at the same time, Patricia Arquette did a fantastic job of depicting wife, mother, and psychic.  Her family were also incredible.  I read the book written by the real Allison Dubois, and it was almost as entertaining.  I’m so glad they did such a great job fictionalizing her life.

 09.  “Good Eats”:  Ok, my crush on Alton Brown is well documented in the much lamented internet lore, but there is much more than just that reason that I love this show.  It approaches the subject of food concocting as Mr. Wizard, using science and comedy to show how different elements effect the food that you cook.  I learned more about cooking from this show than from any other source – even my mother.

10.  “The Dick van Dyke Show”:  This is one of the shows that spawned sitcoms as we have known them in the modern days of color television.  Then antics of the Petrie family stands up to the over half century time since it aired.  They even influenced the time current to them, when Laura Petrie (played by Mary Tyler Moore) wore capri pants as if it were a regular thing.  This small act inspired women to do the same thing, wearing pants as casual wear, instead of wearing dresses and skirts at all times.  This became so inspiring that men and conservative groups complained about Laura’s rebellious clothing.  The network didn’t want to offend either group, so they instead settled on allowing Laura to wear pants during one scene each episode.

S is for Stress and how to reduce it, which turns out to be eleven!

Everyone has stress, and everyone needs to find a way to deal with it, or it can become deadly.  I tried to put together some stress release techniques that may not be as well known, so some may find relief if they aren’t getting it from the mainstream.  These are techniques that are working for me or have worked for me in the past.  I hope they help!

01.  Yoga:  Many people are turned off by the idea of yoga for two reasons.  Some are turned off by the fact that they associate it with spacy, hippie types who do nothing but try to find enlightenment.  Others see it as the pretzel like twisting that seems impossible without dislocating joints.  Although, you can find both among yoga practitioners, this is not all it is about.  Yoga is a form of stretching the body while releasing stress from the body and the mind.  It can be practiced in forms that are viable for people of all body types, including those with restricted movement, illnesses, and morbid obesity.  Not only does it help people to center their minds and relax mentally, it releases muscle tension, leaving you physically relaxed afterwards.

I always feel like a limp noodle after a round of yoga, and it is like a special treat to myself.  I don’t have the room to practice right now, and it feels like I am missing something.  While I am strictly beginner’s level, I get a lot out of it.  If you can’t afford a class, you can find many instructional videos online.

02.  Taking time out for yourself:  This may be obvious, but it is something that most people don’t do, simply because they feel they don’t have time.  You must make time.  It doesn’t have to be a whole afternoon (though this is very good).  It can be as short as taking five minutes out of every day.  Sit down and enjoy your favorite beverage, without trying to get work done, taking care of the family, or planning out your day.  Take time when you get to work to just sit and listen to a song on the radio before going in.  Play with your pet – it’s good for both of you.  Allow yourself this time every day, regardless of how busy you may be or how chaotic things are.  Let it become a ritual, and you may find that it is a small solace that you look forward to each day.

Having a hard time getting everyone to leave you alone for this?  Do whatever you need to do to facilitate it.  Lock yourself in the bathroom; sit in the car; leave the house; just make sure you do it for yourself.  It isn’t selfish.  It’s about letting yourself have a little time to forget about the stressors, and it may help you to more easily take care of the rest of your day.

03   Meditation/ Guided Imagery:  Meditation does not require sitting in an ashram, wearing pajamas, and contemplating your naval.  All it requires is centering yourself and letting your mind unfocus and take some time off, eventually retraining your brain to relax itself without all of the effort.  Not sure where to start?  Try some pages like this one:  http://zenhabits.net/meditation-for-beginners-20-practical-tips-for-quieting-the-mind/

04.  Guided imagery is guiding your mind into an imaginary place, as if to give yourself a mental vacation.  Most people begin by listening to a recording (or a guiding speaker) that leads them through the process.  I began when I was in the hospital, after I had a breakdown.  We began by relaxing and imagining walking down a garden path into the most beautiful garden I could imagine, with no stress and no worries.  Eventually, I worked myself to where I could imagine for myself.  It is the most useful skill I learned after the hospitalization and is responsible for allowing me to go to sleep many times when I am sick with stress.  It’s also fun.  As I said, it is like taking a mental mini vacation.  Again, if you would like to try this, check out some pages like this one:  http://stress.about.com/od/generaltechniques/ht/howtoimagery.htm

05.  Pet therapy:  It has been greatly promoted that those with pets have lower stress levels than those without.  This is because it is true.  Taking out time each day to play with your pet, pet your little one, or just watch them; will result in a distraction to the mind and a boost of happiness from enjoying the little one you share your life with.  Take your dog for a walk, toss a toy around for your pet, whistle with your bird, watch your fish …  It will likely be as good for your pet as it is for you.

06. Planning it out:  Most people feel overwhelmed by what they have to get down every day and what they know they are going to have to face later on.  Sometimes, if you simply sit down and make a list of what you need to do, you can accurately determine the things that must be done and the ones that can be eliminated.  It also gives you a size of obligation, instead of just imagining an abstract weight of need.  Making a plan for what you need to do and a schedule for when it needs to be finished can put things into perspective.  It’s like organizing your bag, instead of just tossing everything into it in a pile.  Making your tasks more accessible can make them less stressful.

07.  Baths:  Simple but effective.  Taking time off to have a bath can relax the tension in the body and help to release it in the mind.  Consider using some scented candles, playing your favorite music, or taking a book in with you.  This can be used as your private time every day, allowing you some privacy of the bathroom and making a great way to end each day.

08.  Act like a kid:  Know why kids use all those toys and silly things?  Because it’s fun!  Just because you’ve reached the age of adulthood, it doesn’t mean you can’t act like a kid.  Get a silly toy and let yourself enjoy playing.  Get a bottle of bubbles and relax while you seem them float away (This can be combined with two of the previous listings.  Use guided imagery to imagine your stress floating away and bursting with each bubble.  Buy your bubbles at the pet store, and spend the time with your pet – mainly cats of dogs – blowing bubbles and watching them catch them.).  Get a coloring book and enjoy the simple pleasure you used to know in filling in that page.  It doesn’t have to involve a lot of money.  Go to the dollar store and enjoy picking something from the toy section.  Take yourself to a time when you didn’t have the weight of the world on your shoulders.

09.  Treat yourself:  Even when you are having to pinch every penny, it is important to allow yourself a treat from time to time.  Get that pricy flavored coffee you enjoy.  Get an ice cream cone.  Pick up a hobby magazine or comic.  Buy yourself a new candle.  Even though life often feels like nothing more than trying to reach an end game, sometimes you have to acknowledge that it is also about enjoying yourself and having some happiness in your life.  This doesn’t have to be a purchase.  It can also be an experience.  Go to a free event.  Take an evening out for Bible study or going to a hobby group.  It’s just important that you let yourself be the important thing.

10.  Prioritize:  You may have to go to work, take care of your kids, and do regular chores; but you don’t have to do everything.  Which is more important, making sure the carpet is vacuumed and making sure the windows10 are washed or taking an evening to watch a movie with friends?  Even though we would like to accomplish everything on that mental list, sometimes you need to mark off those things that can be skipped, so you can enjoy your life.  Put off the laundry and read that book that’s been sitting around since you bought it weeks ago, wanting to read it so badly.  Skip the trip to the grocery store and use those pantry goods that are piling up, so you can take a walk with your spouse.  Realize what is and isn’t important and hold yourself to it.  There is always another day for chores, but spending time on yourself and loved ones shouldn’t be put off.

11.  Music therapy:  Like pets, music is a classic stress reducer.  Something in the notes lets our mind quiet and allows that tension to slip away.  Take some time off to listen to your favorite song.  Play a favorite CD or playlist while you do your work or chores.  Sing (even if it is badly) in the shower.  Let yourself sink into the experience entirely.  Mix this in with treating yourself and pick up a new CD from time to time.  Just let yourself enjoy the song.

R is for The Rorschach Test and a flawed examination of the psyche.

The Rorschach ink blot test was developed by Hermann Rorschach in the 1960s for the purpose of psychological testing.  Despite its continued popularity in popular media (such as television and movies), it has fallen out of favor with the mental health community, under claims of unreliability, being biased, and just not providing valid information.  It is generally no longer used, but the legend lives on.

The basic principle is similar to the “tell me the first  word that comes to mind when I say a word” test.  It is intended to show the underlying thoughts and emotions of the patient, by tricking them into revealing themselves through unconscious reaction.  The tests were judged not only on the response given but for the time taken to respond, questions asked about what you could answer, if you held the card or rotated it around, if you noticed the number marker on the back of the card (as the cards were intended to be given in a specific order), if you covered part of the image to reveal your answer, and even your wording when giving a response (ie. Whether you said, “it looks like” or “it is”).

The cards did have correct answers, but alternate answers were also revealing of the patient’s real nature.  If you gave an answer too quickly, you were judged negatively.  You were judged negatively if you were too slow to answer.  If you gave an answer that the image was not readily seen (if you couldn’t indicate which part of the image was the parts you gave as an answer vs. the overall feel of the blot), it was indicative of potential retardation or mental illness.  If you gave multiple answers for things in the photo, it gave the possibility of issues, such as schizophrenia.  Answering that it looked like an ink blot or giving too creative an answer was also judged against you.  It is easy to see why the test is no longer considered a viable test by most of the mental health community.

Here we go with the plates.

Plate one:  “This is a black and white card, often described as looking like a mask or the face of a fox or wolf.   Possible Sexual Imagery: Breasts, primarily the rounded areas at the top of the image.”

I saw two bears prancing, carrying a large bell between them. I’m sure that would be on the “too creative” side.

Plate two:  “This is a card with black and red ink, often described as people dancing or touching hands with each other.  Possible Sexual Imagery: Male sex organ at top center or, in some cases, a vagina (at the center near the bottom).”

This may show a lot of my feelings on the subject.  I saw a woman with red hair, looking in a mirror, wearing a fur coat that was dripping with blood.

Plate three:  “This is a card with black and red ink, frequently visualized as two people facing each other or sometimes a butterfly or moth.  Possible Sexual Imagery: Male sex organs and female breasts, right about where you would expect to find them.”

I saw two people lifting a trunk or suitcase between them.

Plate four:  “A card with only black ink formed in a triangle-shaped blot. The two lower corners are often described as shoes or boots. This card may also be seen as viewing a person from below or a male figure with an enormous sex organ.  Possible Sexual Imagery: A pair of male sex organs, typically seen at the top of the image. Some subjects may instead visualize a vagina in the upper center of the blot.”

I saw a bat hanging upside down, and it made me smile.

Plate five:  “Another card with only black ink. The vast majority of test subjects will see a bat- or bird-like figure. This is by far the most common response.  Possible Sexual Imagery: A pair of male sex organs at the very top of the inkblot.”

I saw a mothman, like those around Point Pleasant, WV.

Plate six:  “A card with black ink showing an amorphous "splat" shape. This one can be hard to see anything in. Occasionally described as a foreshortened view of a person with their arms outstretched.
Possible Sexual Imagery: The head of the male sex organ (the portion at the top of the card) or alternately, a female sex organ (middle and bottom part of the card).”

Ok, on this one, I did see women’s genitalia, and it kind of freaked me out; because it looked sliced from the body and reminded me of Jack the Ripper.

Plate seven:  “A card with only black ink. This card has a rough "V" shape sometimes described as faces pointing towards one another, "bunny ears", or similar visualizations.  Possible Sexual Imagery: The female sex organs (seen at the bottom of the card where the figures join.”

I just saw the opening to a cave – not a vagina, a cave.  Why do people see genitals on all of these?

Plate eight:  “A very colorful card with blue, orange, pink, and gray ink. A roughly diamond-shaped image with lots of places to see things- a mask, animals climbing up the outsides, a moth or butterfly, a person with their arms akimbo, etc etc. Possible Sexual Imagery: Female sex organs, usually seen at the bottom of the card.”

I saw two pigs, dancing around a bonfire, holding a cloth of some kind between them, over the fire.  Go figure…

Plate nine:  “ Another colorful card, this time with orange, pink, and green inks. This one is tough to visualize anything specific in; most test subjects struggle to find something to "see" in it.  Possible Sexual Imagery: Female sex organs, usually seen at the bottom of the card.”

I saw two red tulips that are on fire.

Plate ten:  “This is the last Rorschach card and certainly the most colorful, consisting of blue, gray, pink, green, orange and yellow inks. It's a very complex mish-mash of shapes with lots of "activity" and plenty of places to "see" things.  Possible Sexual Imagery: Male sex organs at the top center of the card.”

I saw Maypole dancers.  Pretty.

I assure you, I would have not turned the cards and answered too quickly.  I’m not sure what they would have done with me.
